QI SHU FANG PEKING OPERA COMPANY
The Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company is dedicated to the preservation and performance of the Chinese theatrical tradition: Peking Opera. Formed in 1988, under the leadership of Qi Shu Fang, the company’s mission is to promote Chinese and Chinese-American culture by bringing Peking Opera – one of China’s national treasures – to a world audience and to foster a deeper cultural understanding between East and West.
The Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company has performed before appreciative audiences in the Chinese community, as well as played to sold-out houses at the Symphony Space and Taipei Theatre. Highlights of the company’s fifteen-year history includes: in 1999, the Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company conducted a twelve city tour in Florida. In 2000, the Company participated in the International Confrontation Festival in Krakow, Poland. In 2001 the company organized the first annual Peking Opera Festival. In 2002 the company was one of thirty groups invited to Washington, D.C. to take part in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. In 2003 the company made history by staging a critically acclaimed complete performance of The Women Generals of the Yang Family at the New Victory Theatre on Broadway.
In addition, the Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company has been invited to participated in various cultural events: Queens Day Festival in Flushing, Summer Cultural Festival at Lincoln Center, Chinese Cultural Fair, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Festival, Asian Pacific American Dance and Arts Festival, Celebration of Chinese Spring Festival at the Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, Flood Relief Benefit Concert, as well as the grand performance celebrating the Millenium Summit of the United Nations, “A Concert for Peace, Health and Prospertiy”, at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden.
Qi Shu Fang Peking Opera Company has spent a concerted effort to preserve, promote, perform and teach Peking Opera. The Company has staged performances and lecture demonstrations at various colleges and universities and also regularly leads tours in the New York State school districts for children from Grade 1 to 12.
