A Grand Mythic Peking Opera The Monkey King Thrice Defeats the White-Boned Demon Synopsis
Violent and clever by nature, the White-Boned Demon has acquired, through a thousand years of practicing asceticism, the ability to change her shape at will. Learning that the monk Xuan Zang and his disciples will pass by where she resides on their way to retrieve Buddhist sutras from the Western Paradise, she resolves to capture and eat him. In so doing, she hopes to attain immortality. She knows, however, that one of Xuan Zang’s disciples, the Monkey King Sun Wukong, has supernatural powers and is an expert at martial arts. If she merely attacks Xuan Zang and his disciples, there is no way she will prevail. For this reason she decides to deploy a clever strategy, relying on the monks well-known compassion and the laziness and gluttony of one of Xuan Zang’s other disciples, Zhu Bajie (the pig). She changes shape three times: the first time into a country lass, the second into an old woman, and the third into an old man. Each time Sun Wukong sees through her disguise with his supernatural vision and defeats her. But because of his compassion and his lack of supernatural perception, Xuan Zang cannot distinguish between human beings and evil spirits. Thus, to stop the Monkey King from taking any more lives, Xuan Zang recites the magic words that cause the circlet on his head to shrink; in great pain, the Monkey King can fight no longer. Finally, the White-Boned Demon causes a forged order from the Buddha himself to fall from Heaven. Believing the order to be real, Xuan Zang exiles the Monkey King to his original home on Flower-Fruit Mountain. Once the Monkey King is out of the way, the White-Boned Demon wastes no time in capturing Xuan Zang and Sha Seng. Zhu Bajie, however, escapes to Flower-Fruit Mountain where he convinces the Monkey King to return from exile to help his master. On the way down the mountain, Zhu Bajie is captured by demons. Luckily, however, the Monkey King meets the mother of the White-Boned Demon, the Great Golden Toad Spirit, who has been invited by her daughter to attend a banquet. After the Monkey King kills the Great Golden Toad Spirit and her lesser minions, he changes into the shape of the Great Golden Toad Spirit and attends the White-Boned Demon’s banquet. In order to teach Xuan Zang a lesson, the Monkey King causes the White-Boned Demon to change her shape three times, just as she had done previously. Seeing this, Xuan Zang realizes his mistake and is full of regret. He then allows the Monkey King to use all of his powers to subdue the White-Boned Demon. With the help of Zhu Bajie and Sha Seng, the White-Boned Demon and her demon army are defeated, master and disciple are reconciled, and the band of pilgrims resumes its travels westward in pursuit of the Buddhist sutras. |
